Organiser at Goforchess, Clyde Wolpe said the organisation specialises in chess education at schools, and after a number of poorly-run Johannesburg leagues collapsed, they began their league in 2015 as a way to give their students the opportunity to compete.
He added, “We believe that a league is what the children need because there’s no point coaching them when they have no opportunities to play.”
The league invites all northern Johannesburg schools to participate and will host games at Grayston Preparatory School every Tuesday.
With a big year ahead in their Northern Johannesburg League, Wolpe said that the organisation have had requests to expand to other areas. He added, “This is our pilot league. Once we’ve got this right we will move to other Johannesburg areas.”
