A building nightmare in the CBD

SANDTON - Irate resident Max Aston is living a nightmare next to a construction site in Benmore.

“I accept that I live in the Sandton CBD and that building work and development is a fact of life and unavoidable,” explained Aston. “But on most Sundays and at least once a week, I find myself complaining about excessive building noise which takes place outside of regulated hours.”

He said that as far as he was aware, the national building regulations state that building work was prohibited on Sundays and on public holidays. However, the construction group operating next to 77 Grayston Drive complex disregarded these regulations.

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp said the issue of noise in that area has been addressed in the past by building control at Region E. He said the construction company building on the site have in the past disobeyed the building regulations. “The complaints from residents were addressed by building control and environmental health at Region E last year,” explained Earp.

He said the construction company was served with a notice to cease construction after hours and especially on Saturday and Sundays. “This measure did force them to re-evaluate their work schedule on the site and peace returned for a while for residents,” added Earp.

Aston said, “I realise that contractors work under time pressure and constraints, but I along with all other residents, I am entitled to quiet evenings after 6pm and restful and peaceful Sundays.”

Earp added that the construction company responsible has shown very little consideration for the residents living in the area. He said the company will have to apply for permission to work after hours with the Johannesburg Roads Agency.

No comment was received from the roads agency and the construction company by the time of publication. This is a developing story and more information will be released as it becomes available.
