Rhino horn seller to appear in Alex court

SANDTON - A man arrested for allegedly trying to sell a rhino horn will make another appearance at the Alexandra Magistrates' Court.

The 33-year-old man was arrested in Sandton on 24 January, by a crime intelligence and canine unit, with the horn allegedly in his bag, according to reports.

According to Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, the man was planning to sell it to a client, who did not show up.

He added that it was illegal to sell rhino horns without the right documentation, which the man did not have.

He also said investigations were underway to determine the horn’s originality using DNA analysis.

“A check on the man’s citizenry and domicile [is underway] as he is believed to be a Chinese national,” he said. The case continues.
