Having been a straight-A student since she started her secondary education at the school in 2010, her father, Roshan said his daughter’s achievement has made their family “extremely proud”. She pre-empted her incredible marks by winning top student awards in five of her seven subjects at the school’s annual valedictory last year. She was also awarded the title of Dux scholar for the fifth year in a row.
Sookraj said she was very happy with her results and excited for the future. A committed and confident worker she added, “I had complete faith in myself. I knew I had the capability to produce the marks I needed to get into the university I wanted to.”
She attributed a lot of her successes to the positive influence of her parents, Roshan and Sharmaine, who have given her a great deal of guidance and motivation in her high school career.
With a provisional acceptance from the University of the Witswatersrand’s medical faculty, her marks have already secured a R30 000 scholarship to the university’s actuarial sciences, accounting sciences and physical sciences department.
She said her main goal was to help others in the future adding, “I honestly want to do medicine because I think it’s our duty to assist those in need.”
And as the new year brings forth a new group of matric students, Sookraj said, “I think the new set of matrics should remember to have faith. If they believe they can achieve something, they should not doubt themselves. We all have the capability to get straight-As . You just need to put in the hard work and have the right attitude.”
