Hyde Park against helipad

HYDE PARK - Residents in the Hyde Park community have expressed concern to an application which has been made to construct a township which will include a helipad in Hyde Park Extension 99.

The large piece of land lies behind the fences of Hyde Park High School just below their sports fields next to Sixth Street. The proposed township will be able to hold offices, dwelling units and places of refreshment, including a helipad. Principal of Hyde Park High School Manolis Vogiatizis said he is very concerned it will be a great disruption to his students and the surrounding residents and businesses.

He said, “As a school, we are alarmed that this project might go ahead as it would be disruptive to the daily educational process as well as affecting the extramural process.”

The wind in the area moves from the east (Jan Smuts Avenue) which requires any helicopter wishing to land to fly from the west (Oxford Road) in order to land safely.

This has come as a great concern to Vogaitizis as a helicopter would be required to fly over the school in order to land and, in doing so, disrupt the students of Hyde Park High School.

Ward councillor of Ward 90 Anthony Still said many people have put through applications to develop that land in Hyde Park. Despite the constant interest, he added, “I don’t give the project much of a chance to materialise.”

Residents who oppose this project must lodge their complaints in writing to the executive director of Development Planning by 2 December.
