Smokes and smoking guns

BUCCLEUCH - Two suspects were arrested after an attempted robbery and dramatic shootout with the police in Buccleuch on 30 October.

Provincial police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said the suspects robbed a cigarette truck, holding up the driver and stealing the contents of the truck in Glen Marais, Kempton Park.

“The police were then alerted and gave chase,” said Dlamini. “They were driving a Golf GTI. And then a member of the flying squad who was in this area [Buccleuch] received the description of the car and followed them from Rabie Ridge.”

Dlamini added that a shootout occurred between the suspects and the police, with the back window of one police car being shattered by a bullet. No one was seriously injured. The suspects then hijacked a black jeep at the N1 interchange on Maxwell Drive in Buccleuch which they crashed under the highway bridge.

The suspects then attempted to flee on foot towards the N1 highway. The police arrested the two suspects and recovered an R5 assault rifle which had no serial number. They were then taken to the Kempton Park police station and will be charged with attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted robbery.
