Slow service from fire brigade

MORNINGSIDE - An incompetent emergency service poses a big threat for the community.

This, according to Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp who was disappointed by the Sandton fire brigade’s slow response to a fire which erupted in Morningside.

“It took emergency services an hour to get to the fire. They had to phone people to get the directions as they could not find the place,” said Earp. “It is absolutely unacceptable for emergency services to operate in this way.” He added the firemen use an old map book to get around.

Earp said it did not seem like the firemen knew what they were doing. “There was no communication and no direction,” he added.

“Luckily there were no fatalities, but you can imagine if someone had been inside what a disaster it would have been,” said Earp. Unfortunately a cat was trapped inside the house and was affected by the fumes from the flames.

Earp said the owner of the house was in Cape Town and had rented the house to tenants.

Robert Mulaudzi, the Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) spokesperson said EMS received a call about a house on fire. “There were no injuries reported, two bedrooms were affected by the fire and the other parts of the house were protected,” explained Mulaudzi.

He said the investigation to how the fire started is still pending.
