Sandton Cub Scouts enjoy an adventure hike

SANDTON - Cub Scouts from the Sandton District, along with their families, hiked along the Braamfontein Spruit.

About 120 boys and girls from the 1st Bryanston, 1st Morningside, 1st Parkmore, 1st Peter Place and 1st River Trail groups took part. The night hike, which was an eagerly anticipated event amongst the Cub Packs, is held every second year.

The hike started near Hamilton Park and followed the Spruit upriver, to a halfway pit-stop at Riverside Park. Arriving just as darkness fell, the Cubs were divided into smaller groups, and each team was tasked with planting a tree in the park.

The organisers of the event wanted an opportunity to teach the children about the importance of indigenous trees as well as to give something back to the local community.

Ten white ironwood trees were planted by the Cubs. After this activity, the torches came out and the remainder of the hike was completed in darkness. Finishing at the 1st Bryanston Scout Hall in West Hertford Road, the hikers were welcomed by a roaring campfire and a welcome mug of soup for each person.

The Cub program caters for boys and girls in the 7 to 11 year age group, and provides adventurous outdoor based activities aimed at developing character and self confidence. Once a Cub turns 11 years old, they then join a Scout Troop, where a more advanced programme of leadership development is provided to help young people to achieve their full potential.
