Suspicious package at Sandton Gautrain not harmful

SANDTON - A suspicious package was found at Sandton Gautrain Station on the afternoon of 30 September but police found that it was not harmful.

Executive at Bombela Concession Company Errol Braithwaite said police verified that the parcel was not dangerous and all train services had returned to normal operation “immediately” at 3.05pm on 30 September.

Braithwaite said Gautrain security noticed a suspicious parcel at the Sandton Gautrain Station. Customers were evacuated until the police verified that it was not statement.

Braithwaite said during the incident no trains stopped at the station.

“We regret any inconvenience but you will appreciate that we cannot be too careful. Thank you for co-operating,” said Braithwaite.

Unconfirmed reports said the parcel had LED lights but Braithwaite could not confirm this stating that the guards noticed the parcel which was “suspicious”.

30 September 3.30pm:

The Gautrain Management tweeted that the Sandton station was shutdown temporarily and commuters were evacuated. No trains stopped at the station for about 30 minutes.

Police were on scene to evacuate the building.

Once the package was found to not be harmful, the crisis was averted and safety at the station was confirmed.

The train services then returned to normal.
