Elderly pampered and spoiled at Wendywood clinic

WENDYWOOD - Pampered and treated to a manicure session, Age with Wisdom hosted a social for the elderly.

The event took place at Wendywood Clinic and is part of an initiative, titled Age with Wisdom, focused on putting together socials and activities for elderly people.

The initiative was begun by Premi Roopanand and hosts the socials on a fortnight basis. Roopanand explained the reason behind launching an initiative of this nature for the elderly.

“I realised that many elderly people were lonely and needed the company of their peers, so I decided to create a space for them to socialise with others within their age group,” she said.

Roopanand added that socials were targeted at those aged 55 and above and were open to both men and women.

The first social took place on 17 August and thus far two socials have taken place at the clinic. Roopanand stressed that the get-togethers were open to any elderly person, irrespective of where they resided and encouraged both men and women to come join in.

In addition to hosting socials, Age With Wisdom regularly invites speakers to come and address members on issues of relevance to them.

One of the speakers recently hosted was Caring for Diabetes, who gave a talk about diabetes and how it affects elderly people.

Rennie Naidoo, representing Caring for Diabetes, praised the effort put in by Roopanand and explained the work done by the organisation.

“Caring for Diabetes is focused on educating elderly people about diabetes and talking to them about the condition, which is why we came to talk to Age With Wisdom” she said. Age with Wisdom will host another social on 7 October and encourages those aged 55 and above to come and join in.
