Sandton police honoured at Top Cop awards

SANDTON - Brave and outstanding police officers were recognised at the Sandton police Top Cop Service awards.

The awards ceremony, for the first quarter, was held to honour police officers who had gone beyond the call of duty in their various fields.

According to station commander Brigadier Alan Billings, the awards ceremony was an opportunity to thank the officers for their hard work and service.

“We need to recognise our men and women, especially considering the type of occupation we are involved in and the risks they face on the job,” he said.

Billings added that even recognising officers with the awards was not nearly enough, as these people placed themselves in dangerous situations on a regular basis.

He thanked all the police officers and encouraged the police, the Sandton Community Policing Forum and the media to continue fighting and exposing crime.

Captain Kym Cloete, spokesperson for the Sandton police, explained that the awards ceremony honoured exceptional work done between the months of April to June.

“We have these awards every three months, with the annual awards ceremony taking place in December, where the overall winners are announced,” she said.

Categories recognised include Crime Prevention, which included the Top Cop, the Client Service Centre category, the Top Detective category and the Support Service category.

Also present at the awards ceremony was Sandton Community Policing Forum chairperson, Wendy Vorster-Robertson; she too commended the recognised police officers. Vorster-Robertson also encouraged a continued relationship between the police, forum and local community of Sandton – one built on trust and teamwork.

The awards took place on 20 August at the Sandton Police Station.
