SA actor plays action hero in film

JOBURG - Actor, Tony Kgoroge is the action hero in the South African crime thriller, Cold Harbour.

He spoke about his exciting role in the movie at United International Pictures in Sandton. “The director did the movie specifically for me to play,” said Kgoroge.

The feature film is the directorial presentation of New York University film graduate, Carey McKenzie and producer, Tendeka Matatu.

Kgoroge said the role was unlike anything he had played before. “I’ve been playing political figures and husband roles but with this role, it’s something totally different,” explained Kgoroge.

He plays the role of Sizwe Miya, a policeman in Cape Town who discovers police corruption while working on a case. “Sizwe’s character is covered in so many layers,” said Kgoroge who also performed his own stunts in the movie. “Doing my own stunts was good for the adrenaline,” he added.

He stars alongside Fana Mokoena, Deon Lotz, Thomas Gumede, Yu Nan and Zolani Mahola.

“My role was fictional and it was not really based on the trueness of the work of a South African policeman,” explained Kgoroge. “But for the sake of art, we did it to build Sizwe’s character.”

Kgoroge said the film was an authentic South African story that an international audience could relate to. “It is a movie that can compete on world stages like any other international movies,” he added.

Kgoroge said the intention behind the style of the film was to keep people thinking. “We did not want to spoon feed our audience,” explained Kgoroge. “We wanted to let your mind reason for itself and only see how the plot comes together right at the end.”

Cold Harbour will be released at cinemas nationwide on 25 July.
