UPDATE: Dangerous intersection leads to taxi accident

SANDTON - Resident blames the dangerous intersection of Athol Oaklands Road and Willow Brook Street in Melrose for the over-turned taxi accident earlier this afternoon.

Yusuf Mayet said the intersection has been a danger zone and that residents have reported it to the Metro police. “This is a very busy intersection,” said Mayet. “It is busier than it should be.”

Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said, “I am not aware of any other incidents reported at that intersection, this is the first time I hear about it.”

He said the cause of the accident will be investigated.

Netcare paramedics and Joburg Emergecy Services attended to the passengers and the taxi driver.

Nana Radebe, Joburg Emergency Services spokesperson said the patients sustained serious injuries but were in stable conditions.

The patients were taken to various hospitals.

The accident had a terrible effect on traffic, causing major delays, however the accident has now been cleared.

Seven passengers as well as the driver of a taxi were injured when a taxi over-turned earlier this afternoon.

According to Metro police on the scene, the taxi neglected to stop at a red traffic light and crashed into a Land Rover before flipping onto its roof.

The accident took place at the intersection of Athol Oaklands Road and Willow Brook Street in Melrose at about 3pm on 1 July. It has had a terrible effect on traffic, causing major delays.

Metro officers are currently doing their best to control the movement of traffic in the area, ahead of peak hour. They are in the process of loading the taxi onto a flat-bed truck to be towed away.

  1. I drive in and out of Sandton everyday, my honest response to this is… I don’t care. They jump lights, cut off / in traffic all the time risking the lives of hundreds with all of them driving in the Sandton cbd. I have had my life threatened eye to eye by one because he could not cut in over a painted island at a traffic light.

I DO NOT think its because of the Road that the taxi turned over – these idiots drive all over the place and that’s why it turned over !! they put everyone at risk because they are selfish !! they should be banned and our busses and trains should be cheaper and in PERFECT WORKING order to transport people to places !!!!
