Numsa march to cause traffic disruptions in Joburg CBD
JOBURG - Traffic will be disrupted in the Joburg CBD today (1 July) as thousands of National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) take to the streets over wage disputes.
Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane advised motorists to avoid the CBD between 11am and 3pm as traffic disruptions and delays were expected.
“We anticipate that the march will commence at 11am from the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown and the marchers will return to Mary Fitzgerald at 2pm after handing over a memorandum.”
According to Mamonyane, marchers would proceed to Henry Nxumalo Street, turn left into Marshal Street, continue into Simmonds and then into Anderson streets –where a memorandum would be handed over. The march would then return to Mary Fitzgerald Square along Sauer and Jeppe streets.
Mamonyane said Metro and the South African police would be on the scene to monitor the march, but no incidents of violence were expected.
More than 220 000 Numsa members were expected to undertake the indefinite countrywide strike for a double-digit wage increase, but employers were offering eight percent.
The union demanded a 12 percent salary increase, the scrapping of labour brokers, a one-year bargaining agreement and the removal of short time and dismissal clauses.
Numsa members are expected to march in Joburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, George, Cape Town, and East London.
