Brescia girls clean their spruit

SANDTON - A group of pupils from Brescia House School took time out of their morning to participate in the annual Spruit Day clean-up at the Parkmore field and study.

With girls ranging from grades 2 to 12, they gathered around the Braamfontein Spruit early in the morning on 7 June to get their hands dirty and give back to their community by cleaning the river.

“This is incredible because the girls are getting out and actively doing something for their environment and not just talking about it,” said participating teacher Heather Auchterlonie, who was extremely proud of her pupils’ dedication in cleaning and caring for their environment.

Eco-committee members Rachael Layzell, Sharna Fernandez and Lindsay Fyffe said, “Spruit Day is important because it allows us, as part of the community, to actually and get involved in [caring for] the environment and serving the community. It allows us to put into practise what we talk to the girls at school about, and allows the girls to participate and learn in a fun way.”

Head of the Brescia science department Diane Ring, believed that Spruit Day was an eye-opener for all the girls in attendance. She said she thought it was important for them to learn about their environment and all the ways they could help – and put their knowledge into action.

She said, “It gives the girls a significant feeling of empowerment, and [lets] them know that they can make a difference. That’s so important because those are the people who could make a difference in the world.”
