Eleventh Street a death trap
PARKMORE - A pedestrian was hit by a taxi during peak morning traffic on 11th Street in Parkmore on 3 June.
The accident was one of a number of incidents which have occurred in the area, according to a Sandton resident who works on 11th Street. The resident, Tasha Steyn, has expressed concern over the reckless driving of taxi drivers during morning traffic.
Steyn said, “The man was walking from the Shell Garage on 11th Street. He was about to cross the road and he was hit by a taxi that was driving on the wrong side of the road.”
Richard Nkata, a worker at the Shell Garage said, “The guy was going to walk across the road, and the taxi came in without indication and hit him.”
Steyn said that the traffic in the morning in Parkmore normally stretches from the corner of Marie Avenue and 11th Street to Elizabeth Road and the taxis bypass all the traffic by driving dangerously towards oncoming cars.
She said, “I think the Metro police should have people working here in the morning because it gets very dangerous.”
Spokesperson of the Johannesburg Metro police, Wayne Minnaar, said that he was unaware of the problem, and that the director of operations would be notified, so that officers can be sent to 11th Street to apprehend taxi drivers.
