The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said the removal was regulated by municipal bylaws, which were specific to each municipality.
“The IEC is not involved at all,” its spokesperson Kate Bapela said.
In Joburg, political parties could face a R1 000 fine per poster.
Once the deadline had passed, any posters that were not removed would be considered illegal.
Only days after this year’s election, mayoral spokesperson, Fred Mokoko urged political parties to remove their election posters, adding that according to city bylaws, political parties were given a seven-day grace period to remove all posters.
However, according to City of Joburg spokesperson, Nthatisi Modingoane the city council had yet to announce the final deadline for the removal of election posters.
