Celebrating contribution nurses make to society

SANDTON - Tara Hospital in Hurlingham, Sandton celebrated International Nurses Day the “Tara way”.

The special day is celebrated annually around the world on 12 May to acknowledge the contributions nurses make to society. However, Tara Hospital decided to have their celebration day on 21 May to stand out from the rest.

“I know some of you might wonder why we are only celebrating Nurses Day today,” said Themba Mahlalela, the programme director. “It is because we always strive to be different in what we do.”

Mahlalela went on to thank the Saxon Hotel, Sanlam, Capitec and Fournos for sponsoring their celebratory event which took place at the hospital.

Doctor Florence Otieno, chief executive officer at Tara Hospital said, “Without nurses there is no health system. They reach beyond the presented illnesses and understand the ins and outs of the health system. Nurses are important to society.”

Pastor Vuyo Langa reminded the nurses that their good work will not go unnoticed. “Know that there are people who are praying for you,” he said. “We are praying for you. All of you are doing a great job for our communities, continue to do so.”

Otieno added that there was still a lot more that nurses need to do as part of their service to society. “Nurses must engage in the development of health services,” said Otieno. “We hope that they will follow the footsteps of Florence Nightingale and inspire others. We appreciate all of the nurses who go the extra mile to strive for excellence.”
