Flames erupt after head-on collision
KELVIN - Eyewitness Graham Astley saw two vehicles engulfed in flames in Kelvin.
He said, “I was at the car wash and heard a loud bang and ran out onto the street. There was a bakkie and a BMW 320 series involved in a head-on collision.”
Danielle Dooley, EMER-G-MED spokesperson confirmed the incident and said paramedics responded to reports of a motor vehicle collision on Southway Road between Marlboro and Old Pretoria Main roads.
Astley explained, “A passerby tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher but to no avail. Everyone waited for the arrival of the fire brigade.”
Dooley said, “Paramedics arrived on the scene to discover that a BMW 3-series and a refrigerated light delivery vehicle had collided head-on, and immediately after the impact both vehicles caught alight. Luckily the injured occupants managed to extricate themselves from the burning vehicles, miraculously escaping with only minor injuries.”
“EMER-G-MED’s Mike 7 Accident Management Unit and Victor 1 immediately set about cordoning off the area and treating the injured. Assistance from the City Of Johannesburg Fire Department was requested, and engines from Northview and Sandton fire departments arrived shortly afterwards.
Firefighters and EMER-G-MED rescue crews worked together seamlessly and had the blaze extinguished within minutes.”
Dooley said the two injured delivery vehicle occupants were treated on the scene before being transported to Edenvale Provincial Hospital by EMER-G-MED for further care.
“The driver of the BMW was treated on scene, declining transportation to the hospital,” she added.
Dooley said Metro police were at the scene to investigate events leading up to the collision.
Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for Metro police confirmed there had been a request for the Bramley police to investigate events leading up to the accident. He said an investigation was underway.
