#sandtonwalk – a picture perfect experience

SANDTON - There was a great opportunity for people who enjoy taking phone photos to meet up.

Adam Affuta (@afonography) and Craig Lowes (@cityofjohannesburg) organised an instawalk for Sandton residents.

Instawalks are when groups meet up to take photos with their phones.

The first Sandton walk was attended by 20 people. Affuta said, “There would have been more people if it was not raining.”

They started at Nelson Mandela Square, went past the Sandton Convention Centre and carried on around the block.

Caitlyn Morris (@cait_bella) took a photo of grass growing from an indoor space which was captured on 5th street, Sandton.

Morris said, “I took this picture because I find it ironic that nature is kept captive in this man-made structure. Let nature flourish in this concrete jungle. The perspective I chose is from within this metal cage because the plants resonated with me in the way that, I too, feel trapped and unable to grow freely in this city, yet with our best efforts we grow where we can.”

Zeno Petersen (@zenocine) found a basement space underneath Sandton City and took a picture of Tianna Nash (@tianna_nash) at the red pipe lines.

“The colour and lines made for an interesting picture,” said Peterson.

“It was a very diverse crowd, all who attended were cool people,” said Affuta.

Affuta first took a real interest in phone photography a 18 months ago.

“The ease of use and endless editing apps appealed to me, and I found the whole process so fun. From shooting, to selecting, cropping and tuning the image, it all looked good to me,” he said.

“Every photo, whether someone has taken a similar one before or not, has my personal expression on it.”

Instagram has become part of his lifestyle, and has allowed him to meet new people from around the world through its use.

“Seeing people’s countries and lives through their eyes is fascinating,” said Affuta.

“Instagram is not just about selfies, parties, cats and celebrities. There is a beautiful real world to be seen if you dig a bit below the surface.”

Photos from the instawalk can be found on Instagram under #sandtonwalk.

Affuta plans on doing different group walks every two to three weeks.
