Charity art auction raises funds

SANDOWN - More than R100 000 was raised at an art auction and charity gala at the Grant Thornton South Africa offices in Sandown.

Funds were raised for community radio station Alex FM that featured keynote speaker Minister of Public Enterprises Malusi Gigaba.

Gigaba took home Zacharia Mukwira’s untitled mixed-media piece after he placed the highest bid on the framed artwork. Gigaba said, “My first radio interview as the president of the ANC Youth League was with Alex FM.”

Trinity Mohlamme, station manager at Alex FM said, “Community simply means together. We are the voice of Alexandra, we are helping to build our community and we are the way that information is disseminated to the public.”

A representative of Grant Thornton purchased a two-piece art set for their offices by Cape Town artist, Jeanette Unite. The art auction featured other artworks by Bongi Dhlomo-Mautloa, Zolile Petchane, Thabo Motseki, Osiah Masekoameng, Zacharia Mukira and Flora More.

The final piece sold at the auction was a book entitled South African Art Now, by Sue Williamson with an appreciation by Elton John and a foreword by Nadine Gordimer. News journalist, Pearl Magubane won the bid after some fiercely contested bidding.
