A shootout occurred on Grayston Drive after police identified a vehicle that had been used in robberies.

The shootout took place at 10.15am on 12 March.

According to spokesperson for the Sandton police, Captain Kym Cloete, a field team was on patrol in the area when they spotted a silver BMW which matched the description of a vehicle used for criminal purposes.

“They started to follow the vehicle after which the suspects began shooting out of the back window damaging the police vehicle,” said Cloete.

The officers returned fire shooting several rounds into the vehicle.

The police vehicle was damaged and stalled, creating a gap for the suspects to escape. The vehicle was recovered at McDonalds in Woodmead later in the day, but no arrests have yet been made.

Çloete has advised residents to be aware of ‘unmarked’ police cars trying to pull them off the road.

“The Sandton police do use unmarked vehicles and do pull vehicles over. The officers however, are experienced enough to identify if a motorist is slowing down and driving to a safe spot.

“If an unmarked vehicle is ‘bullying’ another vehicle to pull over, that is suspicious and the motorist should call the sector vehicle or 10111,” said Cloete.

She advised that motorists who were asked to pull over by an unmarked car should slow down and put their hazard lights on. This will indicate to the police that you are aware of them and will stop at a safe spot.
