Goalkeeping clinics at St Peters

RIVONIA- Bryan Baloyi and Sheldon Bowes have designed a new football training programme at St Peters College.

Baloyi has played soccer for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana. Bowes is the director of a goalkeeper skills development programme that runs different coaching clinics and academies for goalkeepers.

According to Bowes, the programme teaches basic goalkeeping skills to young players and will focus on hand-eye co-ordination, positional awareness, and learning to dive within a fun environment.

Bowes said, “To be a goalkeeper requires different fitness training, body structure, mental strength, communication skills, focus and vision.”

“Many coaches struggle to understand the basic training and coaching requirements in the development of a goalkeeper. They are no longer just shot stoppers, but are involved in the build up to creating scoring opportunities,” he added.

“It takes a strong character, dedicated leader and assertive personality to fulfil the position of a goalkeeper, but never forget to have fun in the process. After all, it is only a game,” said Bowes.

Baloyi and Bowes have experience with fitness and conditioning training, and want each player to learn about leadership and feel confident on the field.

Bowes said each clinic will have a celebrity footballer attend the programme and offer advice and inspire the players.

The programme is not only about football, it will also teach them about communication, teamwork, people management, nutrition, respect and values.

“Our intentions are simple and transparent. We want to implement the vision and priority that CEO of the South African Football Association Danny Jordaan has stated in coaching within a standardised programme to develop better, more competent and skilled goalkeeper coaches across South Africa. We want South African football to take back its position within the South African Football Association rankings and make supporters remember that winning feeling from the 1996 AFCON final,” said Bowes.

The clinic runs every Friday between 2.45pm and 4.15pm at St Peters College, Rivonia.

Bookings are essential.
