A club for language lovers
SANDTON - Language lovers will love Lingo Links. The group consists of small, friendly groups that meet in members’ homes or in coffee shops to socialise in different languages.
According to founder of Lingo Links Rhona Wetzka, each group is unique with its “own ambience” and way of operating. Meetings are held weekly or fortnightly at a time and place suitable to the participants. The only requirement for joining is a working knowledge of the foreign language participants wish to socialise in. Wetzka urges language lovers to join this year and bring a whole new dimension to their lives.
“Just imagine chatting away and making friends in your favourite foreign language through armchair travel. That is what Lingo Links is all about: a wonderful opportunity to brush up on an acquired language, complement studies, or revamp a rusty mother tongue in an exciting and natural way,” explained Wetzka.
Most members are new immigrants, young wives of businessmen here on contract, or old timers who settled in South Africa many years ago. Wetszka added that Lingo Links is an informative and social life-line.
“Our senior members not only enjoy speaking their old lingo again, but our meetings are a wonderful new highlight in their lives. The new-found interest, mental stimulation and appreciation of their linguistic skills give them a sense of self-worth and fulfilment,” said Wetzka. There are groups for European, African, Chinese and Japanese languages. Wetzka also encourages people to start their own group.
“It only takes two to start practising and lay the foundations. Help and information can be obtained from our website, and you do not need to be a guru to start a group.”
