More suburbs go green with Pikitup

PIKITUP has announced the roll-out of the Trash to Treasure Waste Recycling Programme in the Alexandra Township, Sandton and Marlboro communities.

Pansy Oyedele, spokesperson for Pikitup, said the pilot Trash to Treasure project has been a success at the Zondi Depot and other regions of the city. “In this second phase the entity will be intensifying its efforts to get the entire city to recycle,” she added.

Marlboro Pikitup covers the suburbs of Parkmore, New Brighton, Dalecross, Hurl Park, Lonehill, Magaliesig, Bryanston, Hurlingham, Benmore, Benmore Gardens, Paulshof, Petervale, Morningside, RiverClub, Hyde Park, Sandhurst, Woodmead, Buccleuch, Gallo Manor, Sunninghill, KyberRock, Wendywood, Illovo, Sandown, Athol, Marlboro and

Alexandra.

Pikitup will now be picking up residents’ bags of paper, glass, cans and plastic on the same day as the regular household waste from 27 November in a single trip.

The city council’s policy of establishing local recycling sites in appropriate suburbs using co-operatives to recycle paper, glass, cans and plastic, is now in progress.

For Parkmore residents, who have their own recycling co-operative, this is good news.

Brian Robertson, Parkmore Community Association manager said participating residents in Parkmore have been recycling since 2007 and it made sense to integrate the community’s co-operative, Phenduka Recycling into the programme. “The idea is to get residents to separate out the recyclable material, turning trash to treasure,” he added.

Phenduka Recycling has been allocated a sorting site at the Old Linbro Park landfill area and the main advantage of this move is that Parkmore residents can start generating income for recycled goods and create employment for those on their streets who already collect for recycling from the community’s regular waste.

Robertson said the newly recruited and trained ‘sorters’ are improving productivity and product separation with each load. “We are excited with the opportunity to expand our operation to include 10 000 households within this project. This is an exciting time for the association and for Parkmore residents to join in the project,” he added.
