Taxi drivers are the best tour guides

Taxi drivers are the best tour guides in the country, said South African National Taxi Association Council secretary general Phillip Taaibosch.

“If you get into a taxi and tell the driver where you’re going to, he’ll even tell you what the next street is after that,” he said.

Taaibosch was speaking at an Aligning Transport and Tourism session which included MEC of Transport in Gauteng Ismail Vadi, Gautrain CEO Jack Van Der Merwe, Europcar COO Martin Lydall and CEO of Mango airline Nico Bezuidenhout.

Taaibosch said the taxi industry could play a vital role in the tourism industry. “When we get an opportunity to explore, we grab it with both hands.”

According to Taaibosch, there were 300 000 taxis in the country, employing 66 000 people and transporting 3.4 million people per day.
