
Rose Johnson of the Friend of the Field and Study Park said the squatters had approached her and offered help in cleaning up the area.
“We are making the best of a bad situation,” said Johnson. “The squatters don’t want to be here, but they have nowhere else to go. They are showing that they are willing to contribute towards keeping the area clean, and until such time as council acknowledges the huge problem we have along the river, we must stop complaining and try to do something positive,” said Johnson.
According to Johnson, the squatters did a great job and the river banks were now clean. “When the rain comes and the rubbish washes down with it, we will do another clean-up.”
