Police warn against red light robberies

The Sandton police are once again warning motorists who regularly make use of William Nicol Drive to be aware of red light robberies.

The new crime trend, initially reported in, Red Alert at Robots, week ending 2 August, sees robbers attacking suspects who are stopped in traffic or at red traffic lights.

Rather than smashing windows and making off with whatever is in the car, suspects are now robbing motorists at gunpoint.

According to Captain Kym Cloete, spokesperson of the Sandton police, increasing reports of this nature were being brought to the attention of the police.

“When motorists are standing stationary at red traffic lights, the suspects approach and rob them of cellphones, handbags and so on. A weapon is not always seen, but there is a threat,” said Cloete.

Victims are often targeted because their windows are slightly open.
