No word on community workers’ demands

ALEXANDRA - Community Works Program will take their demands to the minister if they are not met.

The City of Johannesburg’s Region E Community Works Programme was still waiting for a response to its demands from the Department of Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs.

Workers of the programme had gone on strike two weeks ago and its task team had given the department 14 working days to respond to their demands. Chairperson of the task team, Robert Nwedo said if the department did not respond to their demands, they would have no choice but to go to the department’s minister.

Workers were worried that the department would close down the programme.

Nwedo said, “These people are poor and closing the programme would be unfair to them. We are working on the programme daily and we have ways to improve it.”

He said the department had until 23 September to respond to the task team’s demands.
