Hyena found in Joburg

JOBURG - On 26 September, commuters in the northern suburbs were surprised to see a hyena walking around the suburbs.

Reports have come in that suggest Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, Free Me, has tracked the hyena and are trying to sedate it behind the Randburg Civic Centre.

The animal centre, which is based in Paulsholf, said the animal is a brown hyena which is usually very shy and retiring and therefore not a danger to the public. “Brown hyenas are nocturnal so once the animal finds a place to hide it will settle down for the day,” staff from Free Me said.

Free Me suspects that the animal wandered into the city from a local nature reserve.
