Holgate supports survivors of brain injury

Headway Gauteng hosted a fundraising event at Glenhove Conference Centre with explorer and humanitarian Kingsley Holgate.

Headway offers long-term support and therapy to survivors of brain injury and is dependent on outside funding.

All outside contributions assist with support and individual care for persons affected by trauma.

St Stithians Boys’ Preparatory Marimba Band started the evening with a performance that won their band first place in the Marimba Festival this year. With complimentary wine from Norman Goodfellows and snacks supplied by Voodoo Lily Restuarant, the lobby was occupied by people who supported the cause. Exclusive Books sold Holgate’s books which were autographed after his talk and Glenhove Conference Centre sponsored the venue.

Ronald Gevers, a friend of Holgate, has a daughter who attends Headway because of a car accident.

Gevers has a cottage in Swaziland that Holgate often visits and he asked Holgate to give a talk to support Headway with their cause.

Holgate spoke about his experiences on the road in Africa and how his travels have shaped who he is today.

Preventing malaria was documented in his African Rainbow expedition to Somalia and back. He used an Arab sailing dhow to distribute thousands of mosquito nets to children and pregnant mothers in the One Net One Life campaign. “Africa is about drama and storytelling. It is always challenging, but always home.

There is no place like our continent,’ said Holgate.

Founder of Headway Anne Coe thought the evening gave Headway a lot of exposure and that the talk was “fabulous”.
