Reaching new heights for animals

All 25 Sandton SPCA Kilimanjaro expedition members reached the mountain's summit on 7 September.

The mountaineers aim was to raise money and awareness for the Sandton SPCA as the organisation does not receive government funding.

The team had exceeded their fundraising goal of R500 000 by the time they set off for the climb. They were led by Sean Disney of Adventure Dynamics, who is well-known in mountaineering circles for having conquered the Seven Summits.

“Climbing for a cause has become more popular over the last few years and I am sure the animals of the SPCA appreciate this,” said Disney. “Adventure Dynamics is proud to be associated with the Sandton SPCA. The team members were fit and strong and had been preparing for nine months under the watchful eye of Sandton SPCA Chairman, Brenton Booth. Their efforts paid off.”

Tanzanite, the Sandton SPCA’s adorable mutt, accompanied the group to the summit. He represented the importance of animals in people’s lives and the obligation of society to reach out and protect animals.

“Climbing Kilimanjaro for the Sandton and Metro SPCA was a challenging and rewarding experience and was in many respects, life changing,” said expedition member, Mike Brandon. “The actual climb with a group of like-minded people for this worthy cause was truly humbling.”

Sandton SPCA is a self-sustained, non-profit organisation responsible for its own fundraising. A substantial portion of the money it raises goes towards its on-going efforts in Alexandra for animal sterilisation, healthcare and education.

The Sandton SPCA also house, feed and provide medical care for an average of 350 vulnerable animals every month.
