She claimed she had already witnessed four accidents on Marie Avenue, in Parkmore, in the last two months. “Please can someone do something about repainting the stop signs on the roads entering Marie Avenue, from about Eighth to Eleventh Streets,” she pleaded.
Dry said the four accidents she witnessed occurred at night. “People entering Marie Street at night cannot see the stop signs on the road unless they live in the area,” she explained.
“People might be completely unaware of the dangers of not stopping as Marie Avenue is always busy.”
Ward 90 councillor, Gordon Mackay said he had been working with the Parkmore Community Association on the stop sign issue since January this year.
“This sadly is a reality in the area as taxis rat race through the suburb to avoid Sandton Drive,” added Mackay.
“I have called for a regular enforcement presence by the Metro police and this has unfortunately not happened because they have very constrained manpower.” Mackay said he contacted the roads agency to assess what traffic calming measures could be deployed.
“I have suggested to the roads agency that the roads intersecting Marie Avenue be narrowed to a single lane entry and exit. This way it will prevent taxis from breaking the law,” he added.
“The roads agency has not yet commented on a way forward.”
The complaint was forwarded to the roads agency and no comment was received at the time of publication.
