Your local police are not uulasly involved. The issuing bank of your credit card is most likely an FDIC insured bank. One of the requirements of their government regulations under the FDIC is that they take measures to mitigate damages due to fraud and report all fraudulent or suspicious activity. They fill out what is called an SAR and file it with their banks loss prevention department. This department provides the information to the FBI. It is the FBI that has jurisdiction over credit card fraud.
