Frustration over stolen streetlights

SANDTON - A Buccleuch resident has been left disconcerted after the streetlights in front of her home were allegedly stolen.

The resident who did not want to be named said, “I woke up one morning and the lamps were completely gone. My dogs were barking incessantly through out the night so someone probably dug up the lights quietly in the middle of the night and took them while no one was watching.”

She then reported the incident to the Buccleuch Residents Action Community. Vice-chairperson of the action community, Maria Gerondoudis said, “This is the first time something like this has been reported in Buccleuch. We’ve had a problem with cable theft in the area, and those were new lights that were stolen and City Power have not been able to explain anything to us.”

Community liason officer, Helen Mabope said the main problem in the Buccleuch area which could be linked to this incident would be the high amounts of cable theft. She said, “There isn’t a power station in the Buccleuch area, so this makes it much easier for the culprits to take the cables from under the ground without anyone noticing.”

Ward councillor of Ward 106, Stephen Moore who dismissed the idea that City Power might have taken the streetlights down said, “Its quite bizarre, because I know of City Power putting up street lamps, but I don’t know who would take them down so it does sound like individuals stealing them.” The Sandton Chronicle had not received a statement regarding the issue from City Power at the time of going to press.
