Giving Sandtonians peace of mind

PARKMORE - The Nan Hua Meditation Centre in Parkmore has begun meditation classes in an attempt to spread what instructor Duuman Ying describes as the spiritual and scientific benefits of the art of meditation.

After a number of renovations to the centre, they began their classes at the beginning of the year. They have decided to focus on the health benefits of meditation.

Ying said, “We live in a very unpredictable and impermanent world which brings a lot of stress. And scientific research has shown that stress causes an array of health problems such as cholesterol and cancer, and I think meditation can help from a health perspective.”

Ying believes the classes could help people reach a form of medical and spiritual calmness. She said that the short classes could help people in the business-orientated sector of Sandton and would be of great benefit to everyone in terms of their health and also their non-material lives, giving them the opportunity to find their “true self”.

With only beginner classes running at the moment, they are structured simply. But they hope practitioners will want to grow and progress in the art of meditation.

She said, “The classes start with 10 minutes of walking meditation which gets the circulation in our bodies moving. Then we move to some basic body exercises to warm up, then they sit for 30 minutes with no movement and no sound.”

The classes are held every Wednesday at 5pm, and Thursday 12.45pm.
