Giving artists a platform

MORNINGSIDE - Former documentary filmmaker and Sandton resident, Colin Sutcliffe started the Studio Gallery on Marikana Crescent in Morningside to give little-known artists the opportunity to exhibit their work.

Sutcliffe established the gallery at his home in early May and has exhibited a few young artists since then. He explained that when he moved into the house a year ago there was a photographic studio used by the previous owner which he converted into a gallery.

“The previous owner was here since the 1980s. His son was a photographer and built this space completely separated from the house,” he said.

“I spoke to the ratepayers association and they are all for the idea,” said Sutcliffe. “The gallery can be used either as a place where artists can exhibit their work, or someone can come here to teach art.”
