Major pollution crisis looms

Our biggest problem is the despoliation of our environment through dumping, littering, release of toxins into our rivers and the cutting down of indigenous trees for fire wood.

Gauteng is moving into a major crisis around these sources of pollution. I have to include sewage and acid mine drainage pollution. In the city of Joburg, we are close to having levels of pollution which will affect our drinking water. Already, many of our communities do not have usable water and decent sanitary solutions. This is a ‘virus’ which can spread. Acid mine drainage water is not being treated effectively, so the cost of our water is going to rise as Rand Water will have to recover its costs.

As the convener of the Gauteng Water Caucus, I am very aware of the problems that we are facing, not just in Gauteng, but nationally. We have to find a way of not condoning people putting litter onto the road or into storm water drains. We should not litter – we have to recycle.
