Freedom Day in the City of Gold

JOBURG - Freedom Day on 27 April commemorates the country’s first democratic elections in 1994.

The late Nelson Mandela had this view of living freely; “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

Celebrations will take place around the country to celebrate Freedom Day, and in Johannesburg, many events are scheduled.

Back to the City music festival, in its sixth year running, promises to entertain up to 14 000 people with music and art. It will take place on the corner of Bree and Henry Nxumalo streets.

The Lyric Theatre will play host to singer Sibongile Khumalo in the concert, Breath of Life and will showcase her music from the past 20 years.

How will you celebrate the day and do you remember voting in the 1994 elections? Post your views in the comments section.
