R1 500 spot-on fine for illegal dumpers
SANDTON - Illegal dumpers will now have to pay a R1 500 spot fine.

This after Superintendent Ignus Jona said the Metro police busted workers dumping rubbish from a truck in Alex. The truck was immediately taken to the Marlboro Sandton License Test Centre where it will be impounded until the truck owner can pay the fine and take the truck for repairs at a municipal testing station.
“Metro police officers busted the truck driver dumping illegally and the truck was not roadworthy,” said Jona.
Wayne Minnaar, Metro police spokesperson said illegal dumping was causing the city council a lot of money and adding to pollution. “From the onset the truck should have not even received an operating licence in its condition,” said Minnaar.
The truck was found with a black refuse bag in place of a window on the passenger door, live wires were exposed from under the steering wheel and the driver’s door handle was broken. “We are hoping that by forcing truck owners to get their trucks repaired at a municipal testing station, we can hopefully curb any corruption that may take place when operating licences are issued,” explained Minnaar.
Jona said the Metro police wanted the punishment for illegal dumping to be tougher because it was a major problem. “Unfortunately there is no legislation when it comes to illegal dumping,” he said. “The only thing we can do is issue a fine.”
Minnaar said truck owners who did not comply with the law would have their trucks confiscated. “We are going to clamp down hard on illegal dumping,” he added.
