Redhill pupils learn a lesson from South Africa’s past

RIVONIA - Nine matric history pupils of Redhill School attended Talk Radio 702's 50th year celebration of the police raid on Liliesleaf farm.

The raid led to the Rivonia Treason Trial which saw the leadership of the SACP and the ANC being imprisoned. The students were able to sit in on the broadcast, and two pupils, Bongi Maseko and Jonathan Otty, took part in a blow-by-blow retelling of the events that took place on the day.

A highlight was the recounting by pupil John Kani of the police arrival and arrest of the activists. The children all felt like they were reliving the events of the day in 1963. They also had the opportunity to sit in on an interview with the deputy president, Kgalema Motlanthe. Most of the children in the group were also interviewed by various news agencies.
