Noah the movie, has a little of the fundamentals of the original biblical tale however, Aronofsky adds big twists and turns along the way. Like in the bible story, Russell Crowe, who plays Noah in the film, believes he has been chosen by the creator of the world to embark on an important task to salvage the innocent before an apocalyptic flood washes away the evil from the world. It is this calling that leads him to build an ark.
Crowe’s portrayal of Noah in the film is of an extremist Christian, whose devotion to the creator is almost psychotic. The director controversially uses an oracle in the film, played by Anthony Hopkins, to help Noah make sense of the creator’s message. Jennifer Connelly who plays Noah’s wife delivers a stellar performance and gives her part in the movie depth and sentiment. Unlike in the bible story, in the film, Noah’s three sons do not enter the ark with their wives, not all of them are married and one of the sons struggles to fit in with the rest of the family.
In traditional movie format, the film has a villain named Tubal-Cain, played by Ray Winstone to keep the balance and struggle between good and evil. However, the director keeps breaking from tradition throughout the film. He introduces alien-like fallen angels that look like they came from the movie Transformers, who help Noah and his family build the ark.
Aronofsky definitely adds his creative flair with special effects, as well as by introducing a twisted story line. In the film, Aronofsky is brave enough to break with tradition by taking a momentous biblical story such as the story of Noah and changing the original script for entertainment.
