Union of mineworkers march to Sandton

MORNINGSIDE- The National Union of Mineworkers Dilokong Chrome Mine Branch marched to Sinosteel Plaza head office on Rivonia Road to handover a memorandum of their grievances to the company.

Their issues of concern focused on transformation, employment equity, racism, social labour plans and employees share ownership plans among others.

According to the union’s spokesperson, Livhuwani Mammburuu, the company has adopted a practice whereby “black people are not considered to occupy certain positions which deprives them the right and opportunity to occupy any position within the company without any racial disadvantage”.

“We indicated that people at senior positions should reflect the demography of South Africa,” said Mammburuu.

“In all the departments headed by black managers, there are white retired consultants who have been employed by the company to watch over black managers. No black people at the age of 65 are still employed by the company, but white pensioners are kept after retirement age,” he added.

“We believe that the above issues can be addressed accordingly to ensure equality and good labour relations between the parties.”

Meanwhile, spokesperson of the Metro police, Wayne Minnaar said the protest was legal.

“They [the workers] handed over a memorandum to Sinosteel Plaza after marching from South Road to Rivonia Road,” said Minnaar.
