I refer to the article, Sandton City Post Office closes doors, week ending 14 March.
It is incredible that the post office should withdraw this essential service, albeit for a temporary period, with absolutely no prior notice to box holders.
I went to the Sandton City Post Office on 9 March to collect my post from my box only to find that the post box area had been closed. There was a notice outside indicating that registered items could be collected from Benmore, but no information at all relating to the temporary re-location of the post boxes.
The information kiosks in Sandton City were also unaware of the situation.
It seems the post office told nobody of their intentions.
It would surely have been possible to construct the temporary boxes in advance of the closure so that box holders would have had access to their mail in the interim? Now we have no postal deliveries for three to four weeks. This on top of a several weeks’ disruption as a result of the postal strike.
The lack of planning on the part of the post office and their total disregard for the needs of their customers is lamentable. One can only hope that they will have more consideration for their customers when the temporary facilities are relocated to their permanent location in October.
I tried calling the 4 numbers on the notice to have my post delivered. What a fiasco. I spoke to Pamela who had no idea what I was talking about. Then another lady came to the phone and I repeated the story. After saying that she understood, I said, “Now you should ask me what my box number is.” Silence! Then I said “now you should ask me what my address is”. Then she said I had to collect parcels from Benmore!!!!! So I started over to explain that I wanted my post which they had and that it was letters not parcels. Then she told Pamela to take my details, but I am not holding out any hope.
