A scorching hot day and driving along 11th Avenue, Parkmore at lunchtime.
Ahead, a ‘carer’ in charge of a small toddler in a pushchair trying to control a wobbly, slipping, pinkish-red umbrella in her left hand, while she tried to control the pushchair with her right hand – the sun blazing down on her small charge. Approaching them, I slowed down and brought my vehicle to a stop.
You may ask: what exactly was wrong with this scenario?
Well, the pair had just crossed over a stop street and the toddler was now being pushed along the centre white line on the road.
As the woman approached to my right, I turned down my window and asked, “What are you doing by walking in the middle of the road with this child?”
Shock, horror… But relief, as my message struck home and she quickly moved to the side of the road facing oncoming traffic.
How many parents realise what is happening out there? Do they make carers aware of the dangers?
