Special year for Village Safe Haven
SANDTON - Village Safe Haven in Buccleuch has experienced some good fortune in the past year.
According to committee member Wendy Ruiter, there have been many highlights that have stood out for the orphanage, and the haven wanted to share their gratitude with the different organisations, individuals, families and volunteers who have supported the orphanage.
One of this year’s highlights was the opening of the pre-school and learning centre, where each space was equipped with learning materials and tools with the help of donors in the area.
Ruiter shared how being part of a child’s safety during a time of distress and separation from one’s family is so positive and explained that a three-year-old boy was reunited with his family after spending time at Village Safe Haven while his parents sorted out their personal issues.
Their oldest resident, who arrived at the haven when he was seven years old, is now 16 and has just received his first ID book and opened his own bank account.
The haven’s donated greenhouse also produced an abundant amount of spinach, which is being bartered for bread at the closest grocery store.
They were also privileged to have a cycle team of 31 riders cycling for their cause.
Team Village Safe Haven raced in this year’s 94.7 Cycle Challenge and raised R40 000, which went towards bicycles for the teens at the haven, to ride in next year’s race.
Future plans include an upgrade to the main house on the property which houses 13 children, the house parents and volunteers.
“It is a very old house and needs work. It has taken a backseat with all the new building and we would love to give it a facelift,” said Ruiter.
This would include new furniture, beds, painting, damp-proofing, and sanding the wooden floors.
They also want to be able to take the children on holiday next year and take on six more children from the community for the pre-school.
For the festive season, Village Safe Haven has asked the community to sponsor their wish list with events, meals, movies and outings for the children over the December holidays.
Village Safe Haven also appreciates stationery and contributions toward school clothes, as well as groceries, non-perishable food items and a small bar fridge for the pre-school.
