Sandton’s eco-friendly music festival back for more

SANDTON - Hundreds of people gathered at the summer edition of Nokia Rise and Shine Festival at Sandton Central Park.

Welcoming families and South African music fans who have enjoyed previous festivals throughout the year, the event focused on bringing people into nature.

The day began with an 8am pre-festival morning yoga session, and guests were invited to join in and start the day with balance and stretch.

The festival introduced a diverse line-up of bands from around the country to perform for the last event of the season. Musicians included blues legend Albert Frost, MK award winners for Best Indie Band in South Africa Shortstraw, folk songwriter Josie Field, Soweto super group BCUC, Cape Town based pirate carnival band Mr Cat & The Jackal, Jon Savage’s new musical ensemble Kite Rider, Tamryn Jones of Southern Gypsey Queen, Jacques Moolman of Shadowclub’s side project C.O.A.X, and afro-fusion band Banda.

According to organiser Lloyd-Anthony Smith, the festival had received a great reception from the public.

“People seem to love a day of music, fresh air, food and nature in a beautiful park,” said Smith.

In addition, Rise and Shine have propagated more than 100 trees that will be planted at underprivileged schools in Diepsloot.

“The event has grown so much that we are adding to our tree count and are able to host a large variety of diverse artists and musicians,” added Smith.

The next edition of Rise and Shine will be announced next year.
