No stampede at Madiba memorial

JOBURG- Claims of a stampede outside the FNB stadium after Nelson Mandela’s memorial service have been denied.

Attendees of the memorial service rushed to the stadium exits before it ended to catch ReaVaya buses.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu who made the closing address, refused to continue until the crowds settled down but the crowds continued to leave.

Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Nana Radebe said there was a rush of people leaving the stadium and confirmed that there was no stampede.

She said the stadium had been evacuated without incident.
