Green growth initiated by Food and Trees for Africa

FOOD and Trees for Africa celebrated 23 years of greening the poorest areas of South Africa this year.

The organisation has planted more than 4.2 million trees and has developed thousands of permaculture food gardens, bamboo plantations and assisted organic farmers.

Lindsey Tainton of the non-profit organisation said they received applications from communities across the country requesting trees, food gardens, bamboo or farming help. She said 50 percent of the country’s population lacked access to sufficient food and 40 percent of school-going children in Africa were chronically malnourished.

With support from many conscious individuals and companies, the organisation responds to as many as possible.

For the upcoming holiday season, they hope to provide 1 000 more trees and 10 more food gardens to needy communities.

They have asked the community to support the growth of Africa’s environment by purchasing a tree. “Plant a tree in honour, gratitude, celebration, or in memory of a loved one, friend, relative, client or business associate, and give a growing gift to someone less fortunate in a barren and dusty settlement,” said Tainton.

The organisation aims to plant about 50 000 trees, 60 new school food gardens and develop four new organic farms next year.
