Squatters find a new informal settlement

A RESIDENT of Sandton fears that an informal settlement might be starting on Impala Road, between Spartan Crescent and South Road.

Fee Seedat said, “I have noticed in the last couple of weeks, that there is a little collection of three shacks on that stretch of land. It amazes me how the police who patrol the area at various times during the day have not spotted this motley collection of shelters.

“There are clothing items spread out to dry over the bushes, smoke from fires can be seen in the morning and late afternoon when I pass that spot. Soon there will be a fully-fledged informal settlement occupying the place.”

On 7 October during an illegal dumping raid on Impala Road, there were squatters in the area. A man-made cave was discovered by Ward 109 councillor Lillian Kekana and the Johannesburg Metro police during the raid. The three men living inside the cave were instructed to pack up their belongings and leave. The cave was equipped with a carpet, a sponge mat to sleep on, blankets, clothes, books and other belongings.

Kekana said she had not seen any activity in that area since then. “I have passed down there recently and I did not see anyone,” she said. “I don’t know, maybe they come at night.”

However, there appears to be traces of people who are still squatting in the area. Items of clothing, blankets and the remains of a fire were found, but no visible shacks.

Kekana added that City Parks had been to the site to cut the grass and to remove dead trees. “The Johannesburg Metro police have also been following up on the matter and they continue to patrol the area.” she said.

Edna Mamonyane of the Metro police confirmed that officers have been patrolling that area. She said inspectors have been sent to the site and further investigations were underway.
